Families Talking Together: Supporting Caregivers Through Honest Conversations and Healthy Connections

Parenting adolescents can feel exciting, complicated, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming all at once. As young people begin navigating friendships, relationships, identity, peer pressure, and growing independence, many caregivers find themselves asking:

  • How do I start these conversations?

  • What if my child does not want to talk?

  • Am I saying the right things?

  • How early is too early?

  • How do I support my child while still setting boundaries and expectations?

At We All Rise: African American Resource Center, we want families to know that they do not have to navigate these moments alone.

That is why we are excited to introduce Families Talking Together, a free opportunity designed to support caregivers of youth ages 11–14 through guidance, conversation tools, and practical resources that strengthen communication and healthy family connection.

What Is Families Talking Together?

Families Talking Together is an evidence-based family communication program that helps caregivers feel more confident navigating conversations related to:

  • relationships

  • healthy choices

  • boundaries

  • peer pressure

  • communication

  • adolescence

  • emotional wellbeing

  • growing independence

The program is centered around the understanding that caregivers play a powerful role in helping young people make healthy and informed decisions as they grow.

Research consistently shows that when caregivers maintain open, supportive, and honest communication with young people, youth are more likely to make healthier decisions and feel supported as they navigate adolescence.

Who Is the Program For?

Families Talking Together is designed for:

Parents and caregivers of youth ages 11–14.

This age range is intentional.

Middle school and early adolescence are important developmental years where young people begin experiencing new social pressures, emotional changes, curiosity, and increasing independence. Families Talking Together helps caregivers build communication tools early, before many high school pressures intensify.

What Does Participation Look Like?

Participation is simple, supportive, and accessible.

Families meet one-on-one with James McGee, Director of Youth & Family Services, for a free 45-minute conversation focused on:

  • strengthening caregiver communication

  • supporting healthy youth development

  • discussing common adolescent challenges

  • sharing practical tools and resources

  • helping caregivers feel more confident navigating difficult conversations

This is not a lecture or a judgment-based program.

Families Talking Together is designed to create a supportive space where caregivers can ask questions, receive guidance, and explore strategies that fit their family’s values, communication style, and goals.

Why These Conversations Matter

Adolescence is a time when many young people are navigating questions related to belonging, relationships, identity, peer influence, and self-esteem.

Many caregivers worry about:

  • saying the wrong thing

  • feeling unprepared

  • embarrassment or discomfort

  • whether conversations actually make a difference

These feelings are normal.

Families Talking Together recognizes that these conversations are not always easy, but they are important. The program helps caregivers approach conversations with honesty, consistency, support, and trust.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is connection.

Supporting Strong Family Relationships

At its core, Families Talking Together is about helping families strengthen communication and relationships.

The program encourages caregivers to:

  • stay engaged in their child’s life

  • communicate clear expectations

  • create space for honest conversations

  • build trust and connection

  • support youth through important developmental years

Strong relationships and open communication can become protective factors that help young people feel supported, valued, and connected as they grow.

A Community-Centered Approach

At We All Rise, we believe healthy communities are built through strong relationships, support systems, education, and accessible resources.

Families Talking Together reflects our commitment to walking alongside families with compassion, dignity, cultural responsiveness, and practical support.

This work is not about fear or shame.

It is about creating opportunities for healthy conversations, stronger family communication, and informed decision-making that supports the wellbeing of young people and caregivers alike.
